How does Gestalt workYou will be asked to experience your feelings and you may be asked - What are you feeling now? How has it changed for you now? Through casual and non-confrontational role-play, a conversation that didn't happen or needed to have happened can unfold with the therapist's guidance. In situations where clients feel helpless and where they may not understand their own role in their unhappiness then Gestalt is able to help clients to gain self awareness and a new sense of control. Role-play is done whilst seated so there is no pressure. It's a way of exploring questions such as - What would happen if I said this? or How would things have played out had they said that? It's very healing work and the outcomes can be surprising with clients finding new ways of coping, becoming more self-aware, and taking more responsibility in how to shape new outcomes or resolve old difficulties. |
Gestalt - what is it?Gestalt therapy was developed by psychotherapist Fritz Perls who believed that rather than look back at the past, the past should be brought forward into the present and dealt with in the therapy room. The goal of the therapy is to raise client awareness and help them to see and understand their part in situations or relationships. Change at a deeper subconscious level is enabled through the process of role play and empty chair therapy. Through understanding how the choices we make and how our reactions are affecting our own happiness and and the lives of others, a way forward can be forged that shapes the future in a more positive and empowering way. The emphasis in on the here and now and what is being felt at the moment, and not in the past or the future. All skills, resources and insight developed through therapy in the present can be applied to new situations with increasing resilience. |
