EMDR and Trauma, Abuse, and PTSD

EMDR alternates between using bilateral sensory stimulation, such as repetitive eye movements, or bi-lateral tapping and paying attention to specific memories focusing on a trauma or shock that is unresolved in the memory field.
Many people find that the result of Trauma or Abuse is that they have constant replay of disturbing thoughts, images or memories. Recurrent dreams are also common. By administering EMDR negative memories can be processed and the emotional impact reduced to a manageable level.
It’s not always useful to speak about the original events with PTSD, Abuse and Trauma. Instead there is no need to go into detail. One only needs to bring the event to mind. Talking about traumatic events in detail can be detrimental to recovery and at worst can mean that clients relive the event in their minds. This is the beauty of EMDR where it is not necessary to spend time recounting the triggering event and going over it. This is very helpful and liberating for those who have had the misfortune of experiencing trauma or abuse or who may be dealing with PTSD.

EMDR and Phobia

EMDR is very effective in tackling extreme phobias that are preventing people from functioning normally. A phobia is formed from a distressing initial event that the client experienced themselves, a horrific event the client once witnessed, (watching someone else’s fearful reaction to a given stimulus such as spiders), or an having read about or watched a shocking event from which the client came to conclusions about whatever it is. There are 530 phobias listed of which a few are more common such as -
Fear of Flying
Fear of Snakes, Spiders
Fear of Needles
Fear of Public Speaking
Fear of Open or Closed Spaces

The triggering event is processed emotionally using EMDR and negative beliefs about themselves in relation to the stimulus such as “I feel powerless” can be processed. An important aspect of this work is building self-esteem and confidence so that the client can eventually say “I feel in control” and be able to rate this as a true statement. The EMDR process is highly effective and a swift way for fear to be processed. EMDR stimulates the eye movements that happen during REM sleep which is the brain's natural restorative healing process.

EMDR and Pain

EMDR can markedly change the intensity of feelings with pain. There is great hope for work being done using EMDR and pain relief. Developing feeling of calm and confidence is an important part of this work. Pain is such an individual experience that it's not appropriate to make grandiose claims about what is possible but there is solid research showing case studies where pain is reduced and feelings of control and calm provide a new completely new base point.  Please come and visit.

EMDR and Addiction

EMDR is a valuable tool for cravings and addiction from Food cravings, Drugs, Alcohol, and Smoking through to Screen or Porn Addiction . The eye movements directly counter the craving, bringing it down increasingly with each additional set of bi-lateral eye movements. Underlying anxiety is addressed as most addictions are fuelled by nerves and feelings of discomfort about situations or oneself. Dealing with the cravings is only one aspect and it's important to look at why there is the need in the first place or where it started or what situation prompted the beginning of the addiction.
