Psychosensory TechniquesPsychosensory techniques include EFT tapping, Havening Techniques and EMDR, all of which involve techniques that children like and respond well to. Part of the reason that children like them is that it's less confrontational and more interactive. There's something fun about tapping and Havening Techniques even though these are significantly profound techniques that are now being used for PTSD. The relationship between the child and the therapist is crucial to the success of the therapy and one very effective was of building rapport is to use these techniques that engage the child in a holistic way.

Drawing and TappingDrawing or scribbling is in itself therapeutic but it's also a way of communicating in a nonverbal way. A lot of things can be communicated by the empty space, the size of people, the straight or messy lines, the expressions. It's a fast way of communicating essential information and takes away the embarrassment and awkwardness of trying to explain things. EFT tapping provides the method of release and change as another drawing follows. The progression of several fast drawings invariably leads to an improved state of mind with each stage worked through using psychosensory techniques. Of course there is talk therapy going on all the time too, but not in any kind of awkward way. Children can look forward to coming, knowing that they have choices and can be creative. Because the techniques are relaxing they go away feeling a lot calmer and more positive. Additionally they have exercises that they can use at home and this helps with the daily stuff that they have to deal with between sessions. |
